RKD was engaged to produce a robust masterplan strategy capable of realising KFMC’s vision to become the national Saudi Arabian benchmark by 2013 and the regional Middle Eastern benchmark by 2016, with continued sustainable development of the complex right through to 2025.

Originally inaugurated in October 2004 by Crown Prince Abdullah, the colossal 50-hectare King Fahad Medical City in the centre of Riyadh is the most important tertiary care referral centre and largest medical complex in the Middle East. Each year, the complex is responsible for the treatment of more than 50,000 in-patients and 600,000 out-patients as well as the training of new healthcare professionals and the conduct of cutting-edge medical research.

The KFMC complex comprises 4 main hospitals (general, women’s, paediatric and rehabilitation) with a total capacity of 1,095 beds. There are 30 fully-equipped operating theatres and provision for the largest number of intensive care beds in the Middle East. Several primary care clinics, training faculties and specialised medical centres are situated on the dense urban site which enjoys a prime location near the centre of Riyadh.

Our masterplan harnesses strong existing infrastructure around the site perimeter to develop new internal roadways and hospital streets that rationalise way-finding throughout the 1,000,000 sq. m. campus. The new internal infrastructure not only brings current circulation patterns up to best practice standards but also anticipates the scale and nature of construction evolution likely to take place over the next 15 years, remaining sufficiently flexible to adapt as required by operational and economic considerations.

New development on the KFMC campus includes a specialist Neuroscience and Cancer Centre, Proton Therapy Centre, new laboratories and Stem Cell Research Centre, consultant’s offices, new OPD & ER, new car parking structures, new nursing and family accommodation for 5,000 staff and expansion of the existing women’s, children’s and rehabilitation hospitals along with internal re-organisation of the main hospital to provide a total of 2,000 beds.

Further to the masterplan we continue to provide architectural design services to KFMC. We have completed design work for extensions to the children’s hospital and cochlear implant unit. Currently we are engaged in the design of a major extension to the rehabilitation hospital.
