The sustainable agenda and high property values over the last decade have lead to the redevelopment of urban land banks known as brownfield sites and this combined with infill developments can increase the density and compactness of our cities and urban environments. The concept of integration of different zoning within larger sites has also been encouraged by state and local authorities to minimise travel and promote more self sufficient local communities. Increasing density and hence use our urban spaces more efficiently requires careful consideration and the ability to incorporate environmentally responsible design to minimise the impact of development to its local environment.

RKD's experience across a broad range of sectors including residential, offices, community, cultural and retail allows to contribute to successful mixed-use projects when evaluating urban sites for our clients. Whether it is designing a mixed used development for an inner city environment, creating an urban residential infill, or planning local or district retail spaces for potential developments, we always focus on delivering environmentally sustainable solutions to our clients' needs.

Our work in each of these sectors strives to create public spaces for the inhabitants and or community which are successful on many levels where people gravitate to and are happy to spend time. Our focus on design quality is based on tried and tested principles of scale, form, and materials which influence the urban experience. Through understanding of our clients' needs and recognising their economic, social, and environmental goals for each project we can bring solutions to the table that are achieve and surpass these ambitions on multiple levels.
