Micro-biological Laboratory
Wyeth Medica Ireland required a micro-biological Laboratory to be designed in Building No. 3 in the WMI Facility in Newbridge, Co. Kildare. RKD Architects were appointed to assist in the refurbishment in the existing facility and to provide an state of the art micro-biological laboratories to assist in the existing production of the manufacturing suite in the adjoining building. The key elements of the design is the introduction of new window openings to both the Microbiology Laboratory suite and documentation areas, this will provide a line of integration with other users of the facility. The Microbiology Laboratory suite will have appropriate laboratory lighting for analytical laboratory work is designed to prevent shadow lighting at work surfaces. We have located the Laboratory documentation area adjacent to the Microbiology Laboratory.
MHT Laboratory
The MHT Laboratory facility was a re- fit out of an existing office area at first floor level in the Wyeth Medica facility. The overall laboratory area is 550 Sq M. The area of study is mammary hormone treatment. The Laboratory is served off a main level 2 circulation corridor which is subject to GMP restrictions. The internal fit out involved providing walk on ceilings, this practicable solution benefited the accommodation requirements by the client and also assisted in good laboratory practice for the maintenance of services required within the MHT laboratory. The design of the laboratory was developed using the RKD methodology and meetings with end users. The equipment included fume cupboards, Ventilated storage cupboards, HPLC, and gas lineage requirements to lab benches. The design comprised of a dedicated controlled / RBE C4 area which is a classified laboratory to accommodate the required technology platform. The accommodation of the Lab included 100 metres of lab benching, Lab manager and supervisors offices as well as Mill Room, GC Prep room and balance room.
Analytical Support Offices
RKD Architects were commissioned to design an Analytical Development Support Offices area of 2,000 sq.m to support the Analytical Development laboratory and the newly built PDC manufacturing test facility. This involves placing the necessary core fabric requirements to enable Wyeth Medica Ireland to develop new products through co-development of robust analytical methods using state of the art technology and providing the necessary research accommodation and administration area such as IQ, compliance QA etc. The Support Offices are made up of cellular office spaces for lead team members of each section or department, RKD also provided 8 No. quiet rooms for team or telecom conference meetings. The unique design afforded the glazed partition to returen into the office to transpose an open door policy with each team leader. These offices are separated by the main circulation corridor to the main open plan office space. Use was made of large sections of glazed walling to allow light to penetrate into the office space interior and create an open and light interior space.
Analytical Development Laboratory
RKD Architects were commissioned to design an Analytical Development Laboratory to support the development of new pipeline products in Wyeth through co-development of robust analytical methods using state of the art technology. It will comprise a dedicated controlled/unclassified laboratory to accommodate the required technology platform. The laboratory footprint, as well as providing primary analytical output, will have ancillary functions such as storage, sample preparation, specific equipment use, glass washing etc. – some of which may require a dedicated room and/or enclosure of a higher classification. The project consisted of a new Analytical Development Laboratory Facility including ‘RBEC 4’ containment suite, solvent storage & handling area, glass wash rooms, balance rooms, write up areas and support offices. Special consideration was given to the access routes to the facility. Since the design of the ADL is to portray a state of the art image and preference from the client to provide and maintain an access route and the link between laboratory and office suite are kept separate from day-today operational activities and associated traffic which the design team achieved.
Door Condition Survey
The project comprised of an ongoing condition survey, for maintenance purposes, of the existing doors in a 1,000,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility which employed over 1,200 people. The number of doors in the scope exceeded 500 and included external and internal doors of all types from power doors to clean room doors and all standard doors also. The survey repaired damages to the doors along with recommended remedial works.
