OSP4, Pfizer Ringaskiddy
18,000 sq. m bulk active manufacturing plant
The OSP4 project is a multi-purpose manufacturing plant designed to produce bulk active ingredients for a range of Pfizer produced drugs. RKD were appointed by Arup Consulting Engineers as architect to the OSP4 project in 1998 and the work was completed and handed over in 2001.
The floor area of the development is 18,000 sq.m. The design solution comprises a five storey Production Block 33 metres high, juxtaposed with an adjoining Finished Goods Block. The latter contains 13 metres high warehousing, ancillary cold storage and shipping bays linked to a five storey milling and dispersing facility. Both blocks are linked at third floor level with an enclosed pedestrian bridge and by an underground link.
An early decision to locate the OSP4 production away from the existing site production areas enabled a stand alone design solution, which challenged the traditional site building concepts of the 1970-1980 period i.e. dark green cladding elements, exposed roof plant and ducts, and the inevitable reliance on heavy boundary and site screen planting.
The final site location of the OSP4 group of buildings, is set on a bend on the N28 road from Cork to Ringaskiddy Port. Use of light coloured architectural panels and strong contrasting glazing elements has resulted in a pleasing design solution. Landscaping is used to enhance the design rather than screen unsightly elements.
Roof plant has been successfully screened from view by use of raised parapets which are relieved by large rectangular cut outs on the north and south facades. Subtle contrasting panel colours have been used to strengthen the surrounds to window
and parapet elements. The OSP4 group forms an imposing vista on the N28 when approaching from the west. Viewed from Cork Harbour it also presents a striking image.
The Production Block contains production areas, control rooms, electrical rooms, general plant areas, office suits, process and containment laboratory suites.
The Finished Goods Block houses the high bay warehouse, cold store, shipping area, a five storey milling and dispending building and 500 sq. metre QA/QC laboratory incorporating high containment laboratory areas. Operators locker rooms, toilets and canteen facilities are also provided.
The project included 1,600 sq.m of clean room facilities designed to ISO14644 Part 1 Class B and FDA Standard 209 D.
The project received the Construction Excellence Award by the Construction Industry Federation in 2001.
