Guinness Storehouse
Ireland's No. 1 International Visitor Attraction
The Guinness Storehouse building was originally erected in 1905 for the fermentation and storing of the famous stout and is believed to be the first major Chicago-style steel-framed, multi-storey building constructed in Europe. In 1997, Guinness decided to restore the redundant Storehouse as their new visitor facility. The rejuvenated and restored building opened in December 2000. The Storehouse is now the Ireland’s No. 1 international visitor attraction bringing in more than 1,000,000 unique visitors annually.
A sympathetic approach to the enormous scale of this building meant that no major changes were made to the protected building’s exterior apart from floodlighting. The interior has been considerably remodelled while keeping the original structure intact and retaining it as the key feature of this unique building. In its new guise, it acts as a visitor centre, testing centre, a training facility for Guinness employees, a central archive, a suite of rooms for corporate hospitality and a venue for cultural activities.
RKD Architects completed the project with London-based exhibition designers Imagination.
