AIB Bankcentre Headquarters Expansion
37,000 sq. m bankcentre campus expansion
In 2003 RKD Architects won the international design competition to be appointed as the architects for this major expansion of AIB Bankcentre. The existing 40,000 sq. m Bankcentre had originally been designed by RKD in the early 1970’s as one of Ireland’s first campus-style business complexes.
RKD’s expansion scheme is planned around a new 6-storey atrium space, the largest indoor atrium in Ireland, which acts as a central hub to promote staff interaction and activity. The atrium’s striking curvilinear glass roof has become an iconic landmark, highly visible from the nearby suburban railway.
The genesis of the proposed scheme is the “One Building Concept”, ensuring that both new and existing elements are unified in purpose to function together as a single complex. The new pedestrianised plaza and enhanced public entrance refresh the image of the existing Bankcentre while underlining the brand to provide open and customer-friendly visitor access.
Accommodation is provided primarily in open-plan office space with less than 5% cellular offices; respective office ancillary spaces are contained on each office floor. The expansion also includes new kitchen and restaurant facilities capable of catering to the increased staff numbers, a private dining suite, boardroom and executive offices, Dealing Rooms and linkages to the existing buildings.
Working closely with building engineers, RKD utilised passive chilled beams, advanced ventilation technologies, and a high-performance facade to provide AIB with a truly modern 21st Century HQ campus. Through expertly planned construction management RKD guaranteed that not a single AIB work day was lost while the project was on-site, during which time the Bankcentre’s office population doubled to 4,000 employees.
