Shannon Free Zone

The objective of the Shannon Free Zone Masterplan and implementation code is to provide a BREEAM certified adaptable flexible, coherent sustainable basis for regeneration for the development of this important area located within the Shannon Airport Gateway. The importance of the area derives from its existing business links, its character and potential.

The area consists of three sites of the Shannon Free Zone. Free Zone East, Free Zone West and Knockbeg and has an excellent geographical location adjacent Shannon Airport and the town centre. It is easily assessable by road and thus unique in terms of opportunity. The proposals in the Masterplan and implementation code build on the opportunities and provide the basis for a legible, accessible and efficient environment with a high level of amenities and an unique image yet sufficiently flexible to adapt to changing commercial needs. The Masterplan for Shannon Free Zone allows for a flexible response to the needs of incoming industry, bio technology, information and communication technology, pharmaceutical and electronics investors. The delivery of the overall Masterplan will be by way of a phased implementation plan that will consider management procurement, planning, budget and marketing. The plan will be flexible and capable of responding to market conditions and the availability of finances.

Shannon Development has recognised the strategic long-term need (i.e. over 30 year horizon) to have a significant area of land available to attract major industry or enterprise, which would bring added value employment to Shannon Free Zone, and thus South Clare Economic Corridor.

The masterplan will address the medium to long term development of the area in a manner which would be consistent with the policy objectives of relevant national, regional and local policy documents. The masterplan will set out the framework for the re-evaluation and development of the area. Phasing will be an important aspectof the development of the plan.
