Kemmy School of Business, University of Limerick
5,600 sq. m postgraduate learning facility
Kemmy Business School is a postgraduate learning facility constructed beside the existing Schumann Building on the West Side of the University of Limerick campus. The School incorporates a 350-person lecture theatre, six 50-person interactive seminar rooms, break-out study areas, academic offices and communal spaces. On the second floor are an Executive Education Centre and a state-of-the-art ”Bloomberg” type Trading Room complete with 30 trading desks. The 5,600 sq.m. building accommodation is set out over four floors.
There is a 150-seat restaurant building located between the new Kemmy Business school and the existing Schumann Building which provided a social and function link between the buildings. Above the restaurant is a glazed link allowing both buildings to become fully integrated.
A central atrium over four floors highlights the main entrance facing the campus. There is a second entrance entering this same atrium directly off the car park. A lightweight feature stair raises up through this stage with stainless steel and structural glazed guardrails keeping the overall structure open and unobtrusive.
Externally the building is clad with a red brick in keeping with the campus development plan. To the rear is a zinc clad tower which houses the toilet cores and lift with plantroom above. To the front, right of the entrance is a cantilevered white box with floor to ceiling glazing, giving importance to the Trading Room within the building. Dark grey aluminium glazing throughout with cedar cladding to soften the large windows to the offices. Cedar cladding is also used to soffits externally throughout. A new 100-car park, associated hard and soft landscaping is included.
