Abbott Vascular
46,000 sq. m medical device manufacturing facility
RKD’s early understanding and definition of material, people and product flows was vital to the fast-track realisation of this compact medical device facility. Our design approach and project management expertise ensured that Abbott Vascular’s first FDA-approved stent delivery devices were released to markets worldwide less than 10 months after project conception. In addition, our cost-effective iconic strategy for the support facilities clearly and successfully communicates the client’s brand image.
An extremely flexible basis of design allowed for design elements to be firmed up in stages, with significant overlap of design and construction. This enabled a phased occupation of the facility, permitting early installation of equipment, commissioning and validation while construction works continued.
Approximately 9,000m2 of cleanrooms are accommodated on two floors with a highly efficient shared interstitial service zone. This facilitated flexible hook-up of production lines, thereby maximising production line development timeline. Ancillary facilities for 1,040 employees include packaging, sterilisation, e-beam, warehousing and quality control laboratories with support services such as warehousing, cafeteria, laboratories, offices and a separate central utilities building. The Atrium and “Abbott Eye” are iconic design features intended to reinforce brand image while leaving an indelible impression on prospective customers, employees and visitors alike.
